On August 3, 2017 the incoming freshman had an orientation that was planned and hosted by Thomas Jefferson’s leadership students. The theme of the orientation was “There’s No Place Like Home.”
Each of the characters from the Wizard of Oz, presented at orientation represented a different session; in each session the students were taught different forums about starting high school.
Before the orientation began, the freshman students enjoyed snacks and caught up with their fellow classmates. By starting off session one, “Munchkin Land Mixer,” the freshman class met their session leaders and played various mixer games to get to know each other better.
After the games, the students were split into groups and went on a tour of the campus. When the tour was finished the students met the scarecrow and were taught how to work together with others.
Following the forums the students participated in an island activity to see if they could use what they were just taught into action.
While in high school, having school spirit is just as important as having good grades. So, in session three, the class of 2021 met the tinman and were told how important school spirit was and to take pride in your school. In this session the students were taught Thomas Jefferson’s alma mater.
Most students in high school have trouble being themselves; the new students met the cowardly lion. The group leaders taught the students that it is important to be themselves and that their class is their family; so it is important to be nice to all of their classmates.
High school can be very stressful at times, especially being at a magnet school. The session leaders shared with the students how they deal with stress.
To end the orientation, the class of 2021 met Mr. Vincent and were able to see all of the clubs Thomas Jefferson offers.
